How it works

How does booking an equipped 4x4 for the desert work?

Booking starts on WhatsApp with your desert route and dates. Marrakesh Car Rental fits the spare wheel, tow rope, sand ladders and cargo box before handover, signs a condition report listing the equipment, and hands over a full tank at the Marrakech office or Ménara arrivals.

  1. Send your route and dates

Message the desert route — Merzouga, Agafay or the Atlas — plus your travel dates and preferred SUV on WhatsApp. No online payment is taken to hold the booking.

  2. Choose Duster, Tucson or Touareg

Pick the model by boot space and budget; all three carry the same desert equipment and the same mileage cap.

  3. Equipment fitted before handover

The spare wheel, tow rope, sand ladders and cargo box are fitted and listed on the condition report before you sign.

  4. Collect at Ménara or in town

Handover takes about ten minutes at Ménara arrivals or the Marrakech office on Wahat Sidi Brahim; licence, passport and deposit are checked.

  5. Drive out on a full tank

The car leaves with a full tank under the full-to-full policy, ready for the fuel stops on the route to the desert.

  6. Return and release

Bring the car back to the same point; the 6,000 MAD deposit pre-authorisation is released within two working days.

Who needs an equipped 4x4 rather than a standard SUV in Marrakech?

Anyone driving off the tarmac benefits from an equipped 4x4 — the spare wheel, sand ladders and tow rope are built for piste and hammada, not city streets. Self-drive travellers to Merzouga, Agafay campers and groups carrying camping gear gain the most.

What are the terms for renting an equipped 4x4 for the desert?

A driving licence in Latin script, a passport and a driver aged 21 or over are required at handover. The deposit is 6,000 MAD, held as a card pre-authorisation, and off-piste damage is never covered by the included insurance.

What else should you know about equipped 4x4 rental for the desert?

Is off-piste damage covered on an equipped 4x4?

No. The included collision damage waiver covers tarmac and graded piste driving, but tyres, the windscreen, the underbody and off-piste damage are never covered, whatever excess option is chosen.

Can you get the no-deposit waiver on an equipped 4x4?

No. The €7-a-day waiver applies only to economy, compact, automatic and 7-seater cars; the 4x4/SUV class carries the standard 6,000 MAD deposit instead.

Is there a mileage limit on the equipped desert 4x4?

Yes. The equipped 4x4 is capped at 250 km a day, lower than the unlimited mileage on the rest of the fleet, set for sustained piste and hammada driving.

Do you need a special licence category to drive a 4x4 in Morocco?

No. A standard national driving licence in Latin script covers the Duster, Tucson and Touareg, the same as any other model in the fleet.

Where is the desert equipment fitted?

The spare wheel, tow rope, sand ladders and cargo box are fitted at the Marrakech office on Wahat Sidi Brahim or at Ménara arrivals, before the condition report is signed.

Which desert route is the equipped 4x4 built for?

The equipped 4x4 is built for the crossing to Merzouga over the Tizi n'Tichka and for shorter piste runs onto the Agafay desert near Marrakech.
