Going further

What is a 4x4 best for around Marrakech?

A 4x4 earns its cost on the roads that leave the plain: the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, the stone pistes of Agafay, and the narrow valley road to Setti Fatma. Inside Marrakech itself, a smaller car parks more easily.

What are the rental conditions for a 4x4 in Marrakech?

A 4x4 needs a driver aged 21 or over holding a licence for at least a year, and a deposit of 6,000 MAD held as a card pre-authorisation. Insurance and unlimited mileage are included. Only the all-wheel-drive models may leave tarmac.

4x4, 7-seater or economy car: which should you choose?

Choose a 4x4 for mountain passes and pistes, a 7-seater when you are six or more people on tarmac, and an economy car for city driving and coastal runs. The deciding factors are ground clearance, seat count and how easily the car parks.

  • Take the 4x4 if…

You are driving the Tichka, Ourika or Agafay, carrying four adults with luggage, or want the higher seating position on mountain roads. From €35 a day.

  • Take the 7-seater if…

You are six or seven travellers on surfaced roads. It has the seats a 4x4 does not, but it sits low and is not cleared for pistes.

  • Take the economy car if…

You are based in Marrakech and driving to Essaouira or Casablanca on tarmac. It costs €10 a day less and fits the parking in Guéliz.

What else should you know before renting a 4x4 in Marrakech?

Do you need a 4x4 to drive to Merzouga?

No. The route to Merzouga is surfaced the whole way and any car reaches the village. A 4x4 only becomes necessary for the dune tracks beyond it, which are normally done with a local driver rather than a rental.

Is the Tizi n'Tichka pass dangerous in a rental car?

No. The N9 was widened and resurfaced between 2017 and 2023 and now carries two proper lanes with barriers. The real hazards are overtaking lorries and winter ice above 2,000 m, not the road itself.

Can you take a rental 4x4 off-road in Morocco?

Only the all-wheel-drive models, and only on graded pistes. Soft sand, dry riverbeds and dune driving void the insurance on every rental car in Morocco, including ours. Underbody damage is never covered.

Is a 4x4 automatic or manual in Marrakech?

Five of the six models are automatic. Only the Dacia Duster is offered with a manual gearbox. Automatic is worth having on the Tichka switchbacks and in Marrakech traffic.

How much fuel does a 4x4 use on a Marrakech road trip?

Reckon on 7 to 9 litres per 100 km for the diesel models. Marrakech to Ouarzazate and back is 392 km, so roughly 32 litres, or about 370 MAD at current Moroccan diesel prices.

Can a 4x4 be delivered to Marrakech Ménara airport?

Yes, at no extra cost. We meet arrivals in the RAK arrival hall with the car parked outside, complete the contract there, and take the keys back at departures when you leave.
